Why You Should Verify Your Therapist’s License
Just in case you didn’t know, your (future) therapist is required to hold a license in every state where they see clients.
It’s against the law to practice without one. 😬
Checking up on their license is not creepy. Here’s why:
- if they don’t have a license, they may not have the proper training and experience that you need. your mental health deserves the very best.
- they may have ethical violations on their record, or have been suspended. your mental health deserves the very best.

That is why we have compiled the list below of links to all 50 states board certification verification tools. All you should need are:
- provider’s full name
- provider’s license type (for example, LPC-licensed professional counselor, LCSW-licensed clinical social worker, PSY-licensed psychologist, etc.)
- if you have their license number, that is helpful although not usually necessary
An active license and a clean record is the bare minimum. It doesn’t mean that they are a good therapist. 🤔
Use your best judgement and trust your gut. Your mental health deserves the very best.
